- Someone must be available to exercise your adopted puppy or dog at least once every 3 hours during the day.
- Puppies under the age of six months are not adopted out to families with children 7 years old or younger.
- Someone in the adoptive family must have first-hand puppy raising experience if adopting a puppy.
We require that each of our pets are adopted out to a permanent, stable, safe and loving home for their entire lives.
WHERE DOES THE ADOPTION FEE GO? -
Many shelters charge Rescue's for pull fees which are anywhere from $50 to $175.00 and transport costs.
Many puppy mills charge us a fee per dog for health certificates and transport
Why do we ask for an Adoption Donation?
The answer is because we need adopters who are willing to support all rescue pets, not just the dog they adopt. A young, healthy dog might cost us $150-$250 in total costs, and many people will want to adopt it. One sick puppy can easily cost us $2000 or more. We would never expect to charge an adoption fee of $2000.00 or more, therefore we need to off-set their costs through our total program. We hope that you too are willing to give an opportunity for a better life to ALL of our dogs by supporting them through adoption donations. Without these funds, our rescue efforts would not be possible."
Many rescue groups will not deal with puppies. They have good reason. Puppies who have been placed in shelters, or not properly taken care of in their early weeks, often need vet care. We rarely receive a litter of pups that does not need antibiotics or more when they arrive into our care. One puppy who needs a two or three day hospitalization easily runs us $1000. If one puppy in the litter is sick, they all will require treatment. We have had virus's go through litters that have run us up to $8,0000. Once we commit to saving a dog, we commit to the well being of that life and will treat and care for them as one of our own but the costs are high - both emotionally and financially.
Our dogs and puppies come not only from Delaware but from VA, WV, GA, OH, TN and IN which involve transportation costs (van rental, driver fee's, GAS, tolls).
VET BILLS - Our biggest expense. DPR pays for boarding at vet offices for a minimum of two weeks on transports out of state. All animals are thoroughly examined by a certified vet prior to release for adoption. All puppies are wormed and given their first set of shots and all adult dogs are altered, up to date on shots, given heartworm and flea control, heartworm and lyme tested.
SPECIAL NEEDS - DPR often takes in special needs dogs. They may range from needing extended vet care, extended foster care or specialized surgery. The dogs we rescue from Lancaster, PA Puppy Mills typically cost us over $800.00 in vet care.
THERE IS NO PROFIT IN OUR RESCUE - LOTS OF DEBT, LOTS OF HEARTACHE, HEADACHE, STRESS AND
KNOWING YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE TO THAT ONE PRECIOUS LIFE.
